In the year 1977 on August 15th, a mysterious radio signal was received by the Big Ear radio telescope at the Ohio States universities in America for 72 seconds. Its intensity was 30 times more than a normal radio signal. This radio signal is called as Wow! Signal. Scientist found that this signal had come from the Sagittarius constellation. This was still a mystery who sent that signal. Are aliens trying to contact us? Do aliens really exist? How we can find aliens? NASA also sent a message for aliens? What is that message? Are There Really Aliens?
Let us consider an example to know whether aliens really exist or not:
The number of stars in the universe is equal to more than the number of sand particles present on all beaches in this world. You can't even imagine that count. In that our sun is a small sand particle and we can't say that only there is life on the 3rd planet of the sun in this universe. Because there are trillions of other stars and there are many planets for each star. It is foolishness if we say that there is only life on this earth. I hope you understood.
NASA launched Kepler Space Telescope to find out the planets which have a chance to have a life in our galaxy like our earth. It found crores of planets that are the size of our earth. But the biggest difficulty is to find whether there is life or not on that planets. Water is the main thing to form life on planets. Water must in a liquid state it means it must be at the right distance from its star. This is called the "Habitable Zone".
•If the planet is inside the habitable zone, water will be in the form of vapour as very hot.
•If the planet is outside the habitable zone, water will be in the form of solid-state(ice) as very cool.
•If the planet is in the habitable zone, water will be in the form of a liquid state.
Our earth can form life because it is in the habitable zone. Scientists are trying to find our planets which are in the habitable zone. Kepler telescope founds more than 1200 planets that have a chance to have water.
There are two ways to find whether there are aliens on other planets:
1. Sending signals.
2. Receiving Signals.
Let us find about them in detail
1) Sending Signals:
In 1977 NASA launched Voyager 1 Space Probe. This was to send a message for aliens if present on other planets and tell them that our presence o earth. They stored images of our earth and few kinds of music and others in a recorder. This is called Golden Record. They stored maths and physics formulas, DNA structure, Solar system, Human body, some other animals and a total of 116 photos and sounds of thunders, wind, train sound, human laugh, baby cry and heartbeat and other sounds. They also recorded greetings in 55 languages. They also arranged a record player as aliens may not have any and clear instructions book to use including diagrams.
Someday if the message sent by NASA through Voyager 1 to the aliens was received then the aliens will get to know that there are other people in the universe. It was nearly 43 years after launching Voyager 1. It even crossed our solar system and went nearly 19,000,000,000 km from our earth. Even though we are receiving signals through it. It was the only object that went so far from us. As electromagnetic radio waves don't need any medium to travel we are still receiving signals from Voyager 1. Even though it takes 20 hours for signals to pass from Voyager to us and it increases on distance increases. We can keep in contact with Voyager even if it is in a distance of many light-years.
Another problem is Voyager works with Nuclear Power and it produced 470 watts of power when it is launched and now it is producing only 270 watts of power. If fuel was completed in Voyager we cant receive signals from it and to save power NASA shutdown heaters and cameras in it. Even though within 8 years the power in Voyager will complete and we will not receive signals anymore. Voyager travels at a speed of 62,000 km for an hour and crossed our solar system. Even though it takes voyager 40,000 years o reach another star which is near to us. So, NASA made that golden recorder in a way so that it will even last for more than billions of years.
NASA also Launched space probes like Voyager 2, Pioneer 10, Pioneer 11 to send message to aliens. NASA wrote with clear instructions with diagrams and images of the highest atom Hydrogen and etc. Fortunately, if someone received the message and if they send a reply it takes thousands of years for us to receive. Now, let us see about receiving messages.
2) Receiving Messages:
Since Marconi invented the radio we are sending radio signals to the universe. These travel crores of kilometres around our earth. These radio signals are spread nearly 100 light-years of distance from our earth In all directions. It is called Earths Radio Bubble. Now, if there are aliens inside the planets present in the earth radio bubble and if they have radio signal receivers they can know that there is someone present in this universe.
To receive the radio signals from other planets if they send them like us, our scientists have arranged very complicated Radio telescopes. Only for finding life on other planets, a non-profitable organisation named SETI ( Search for Extraterrestrial Intelligence ) is working with many scientists.
Even the aliens must have the technology for receiving these signals. If we get a signal from aliens it means that technology had also developed for them.
This is the only possible method to find whether there are aliens are not. But, sending probes for every planet and checking for aliens is impossible. With the technology present now it takes 40,000 years to make a rocket and send it to outside of our solar system. Scientist like Stephen Hawking said to be careful with the aliens and warned that it is better not to let aliens know our presence because they are much intelligent than us. But, NASA is telling us that within 20 years they will find aliens. Let us see if it helps or destroys the humans in a relationship with aliens.
