If this happens with one or two mobiles there will be n problem but there are hundreds of mobiles in aeroplanes, so all mobiles will search for a signal from a cell tower when they are not in aeroplane mode. This releases electromagnetic radiations and creates a type of radio pollution. This will interfere with the navigation equipment and air traffic controllers which are present in the piolets cockpit and an annoying sound will be heard by piolets if your mobiles are not kept in Flight mode while flying in an aeroplane.

So don't forget to turn on flight mode next time when you are flying in an aeroplane.
